Tracking Sensor and ECU Fault Codes with Basic Tools

You’re out there in the field, and your dealer scanner is nowhere in sight when the ECU starts acting up. What are your go-to tricks, blink-code hacks, or basic tools for tracking down faults without having to do a complete teardown?

Had an ECU act up while I was baling, and I didn’t have a scanner on hand.
I started cycling the key to check for blink codes, testing grounds with a light, and fiddling with the harnesses.
Within minutes, I found a loose ground on the frame. Sometimes you really can’t beat the basics.

Mine conked out during planting and I was miles from the shop. I grabbed a multimeter checked the reference voltage and back-probed the sensors until I found one that was dead. After cleaning the connector it sprang back to life. Now that multimeter's my good luck charm in the cab.

One late night during harvest, I saw the warning light flashing like it was trying to send a message.
Counted the blinks, looked it up in the manual, and traced the circuit with a test light.
It turned out to be a wire that had been worn down.
That little fix saved me from a long tow and a cranky morning.
