Quick check for PTO clutch engagement

You start up your machine, and the PTO feels a bit… reluctant. What’s your quick and dependable way to check if it’s actually engaging before you tackle the tough jobs? Share your tricks and help someone dodge that annoying 'why isn’t this working?' situation.

I've learned to quickly test the PTO by putting it under a small load. If it doesn't kick in, something's definitely not right. A fast look at the PTO shaft can be useful too, just in case.

When the PTO's acting up, I first check the switch and make sure the clutch is completely disengaged.
A quick run with a light attachment helps, and if it still won't engage, I look into any air or hydraulic pressure problems

Before getting into the heavier tasks, I always engage the PTO while idling and listen for any strange noises or delays. If it's not working smoothly, I check the linkage or examine the fluid pressure this way, I can avoid the panic of ‘why isn’t it working?
