You’re out there with your Kubota, everything seems to be running smoothly, until suddenly the hydraulics start to feel a bit sluggish. Before that little whine escalates into a major headache, what early warning signs, quick pressure checks, or handy tricks do you rely on to catch pump or valve issues?

I always pay attention to changes in sound. Pump cavitation has this unique whining noise that stands out from regular operation. I caught mine early last spring because it sounded off at startup. It turned out the suction filter was clogged, an easy fix before it caused any damage to the pump.

Keep an eye on your hydraulic fluid temp. If it’s running hotter than usual, something’s either working too hard or bypassing internally. Also, be alert for slow response times on your cylinders, that’s usually the first sign that something’s going wrong.

After running your system for a while, feel the hydraulic lines. The return line should be warm but not excessively hot. If it’s burning up, you’ve got some serious bypassing going on. And don’t forget to check the fluid level regularly, low fluid can ruin pumps in no time.
