Turning a Kubota Z482 manually

Nothing much to do so I agreed to help my uncle with his Kubota Z482 diesel (in a GR2120) for its first start in over a year. The battery is still dead, so before we replace it, I tried turning it over by hand at the crank pulley just to check for any binding. It budged a little, but I couldn't get it to go full circle. Should it move freely or do we need to loosen something first to make that happen? TIA.

So it hasn't run in over a year? If you're having trouble turning it by hand, it should normally rotate freely with some resistance, but it shouldnt be stuck. You wont need to loosen anything, but try removing the glow plugs or injectors to relieve compression, it'll make turning the engine easier and help check for any internal binding. If it still won't turn fully, there could be rust or internal seizing.

Are you sure it's even worth reviving that old Kubota instead of just parting it out and investing in something newer and more efficient?

It should turn pretty freely by hand even if it's stiff from sitting a while, you should be able to spin it all the way around without needing to loosen anything
