Track vs. tire performance - which handles rough terrain better?

I've been thinking about whether tracks or tires provide better traction and ride comfort on rough terrain. For those who've tried both options, which one works better in actual field conditions?

My next door neighbor has a Bobcat with a snow blower and tracks. He has a large hill to climb leaving his home on the lake, and he cannot blow it if the asphalt gets icy. The Bobcat just slides down the hill backwards. He has asked me to clear it with my four wheel drive when it gets slippery this winter. Also you cannot put tire chains on tracks.

Tracks spread weight better, which helps on soft ground. But tires are usually faster and easier to handle on most surfaces and are more fuel-efficient. How smooth the ride is depends on the suspension, not just the tracks or tires.
