How to check axles and driveshafts for play or vibration

I've noticed this annoying vibration in my L4701 that definitely wasn't there last month, and I'm trying to figure out if it's the driveshaft u-joints acting up or if there's some axle play starting to develop. What’s your go-to inspection routine for checking drivetrain components before that vibration turns into a costly breakdown right in the middle of the field?

Lift each wheel one at a time and spin them by hand. Listen for any grinding noises or feel for roughness in the bearings. Then, grab the driveshaft and twist each u-joint to check for any movement. If you notice any play, it’s a sign it should be replaced before it completely fails during your job.

Switch to 4WD and drive slowly in figure-eights. Pay attention to any clicking or binding sounds. Problems with the front axle usually become apparent during tight turns. Also, check all u-joint grease fittings, if they’re dry, those joints can wear out quickly, leading to early signs of vibration.

Put the vehicle in neutral and coast at the speed where you feel the vibration. If it still vibrates, you’re looking at something mechanical, could be the driveshaft, wheels, or tires. If the vibration stops, it’s likely related to the engine or transmission. This simple test helps narrow down the problem without any tools. After that, inspect based on your findings to identify the troublesome component quickly.

Start by checking the tire balance. Unbalanced or damaged tires can mimic drivetrain vibrations.
Rotate your tires and see if the vibration shifts location. If the vibration follows the tire, you’ve likely found the culprit.
It’s the easiest fix if that’s what’s causing the issues.

Great diagnostic methods from everyone. It makes sense to start with basic checks like tire balance and then look into u-joints, bearings, and the coast test. Taking a systematic approach to troubleshooting helps avoid replacing parts that aren't needed. Appreciate you sharing your inspection routines.
