Last week my Kubota B7800 began making a whining or grinding noise which sounds like it's coming from below, maybe a bit more towards the back, not quite sure. Before I start tearing everything apart, what do you think it might be?

Sorry to hear bout that!
It could be a sign of something going on in the transmission or the rear axle, like low fluid level, a bad bearing, or maybe even something with the PTO clutch pack if it's constant.
Before you start tearing into it, the first and easiest thing to do is check the fluid level in the rear end and transmission.
It's an easy check and a low level can definitely cause those kinds of noises. Use the dipstick and make sure it's topped off with the right fluid, Kubota UDT or Super UDT.
If the fluid looks milky or has metal shavings, that's a sign of a bigger problem.
So fingers crossed, it's just low!
Hope this helps!

I encountered a similar problem a while back, and the sound was a bit more of a whine than a grind especially when I was working the 3-point hitch. It turned out to be an issue with the hydraulic pump so I suggest to also check your hydraulic fluid. Make sure it's at the right level and doesn't look milky or have a bunch of metal flakes in it. A lot of weird noises can be traced back to low or old fluid.
