I had this ZD326 diesel rebuilt a couple years ago and now it's acting up again. I don't know why this is happening... it's been emitting heavy smoke. When I checked, the oil level is good. My local shop says it needs a whole new engine, but they won't do rebuilds. I don't have anyone who can help me work on this 2012 model now since they don't all accept it anymore. It starts and runs ok, but do expect it to be just rough and smoky. I'm starting to wonder if it's even worth spending more money into. What would you do?

If it starts and runs but is blowing heavy smoke, it could be something like worn injectors valve seals or turbo issues... Not necessarily a full engine replacement. Since the shop wont rebuild it and its a 2012, you've got to weigh the cost of a new engine versus replacing the whole unit. If it's otherwise in decent shape and you rely on it, getting a second opinion from a diesel specialist might be worth it before giving up on it completely.

It sounds like the rebuild was half-done or done poorly. Dumping more money into a flawed engine just feeds a bad cycle, sometimes a replacement is the smarter move.

Likely worn internals or injector problems. At this point, you've got to weigh whether a used engine swap or parting it out is cheaper than sinking more into rebuilds you can't get done
