PTO not engaging after swapping tiller

Last week I took off my rotary cutter and hooked up a tiller to get the garden ready. Now the rear PTO won't work right. The lever moves like normal, but the shaft just spins and doesn't turn the tiller. I have a 2019 Kubota L3901 for reference.

I saw that the tiller's shaft is a little longer than the cutter's, so maybe I pushed something too far when I connected it? There's no grinding or strange sounds, just no power going to the tiller.

Fluid looks fine, and everything else seems okay. Could I have loosened something in the clutch or linkage?

If the PTO shaft on your Kubota L3901 spins freely but doesn't transfer power to the implement, it could be due to a driveline misalignment or a problem with the PTO clutch or control valve. Sometimes, if the tiller's shaft is longer, it can push too far into the PTO hub and prevent the splines from engaging. Make sure the tiller's yoke is fully seated and locked. If the locking pin isn't fully in place, the shaft might spin without connecting. Check the control valve adjustment also, as this is a common issue on this model. If it's not set correctly, the clutch pack may not engage.

Have you tried turning on the PTO with the tractor off and then manually rotating the tiller shaft to check for resistance or slippage? This can help you figure out if the problem is mechanical or hydraulic. If the lever feels normal but the tiller still doesn't work, I would check the PTO clutch for wear or misalignment next. Let me know if the tiller worked fine on a different tractor before you switched. This can help rule out compatibility problems.

Okay, so the PTO clutch probably isn't catching right. When you hooked up the tiller, the input shaft may have shoved the PTO shaft too far ahead, keeping the clutch from fully engaging. Try unhooking the tiller, look at where the PTO shaft is sitting, and then reattach it carefully. You might also want to make sure the PTO clutch is adjusted correctly since connecting a different tool can throw it off.
